An airport created by the town of Deauville
Deauville Saint-Gatien Airport was created by designers and developers from the town of Deauville in 1931. It was built in the area of Saint-Gatien-des-Bois, some 8 kms from the centre of Deauville itself.
On 14 November 1986, the town concluded an agreement with the French Civil Aviation Authority. This agreement laid out the conditions of the development, maintenance and operation of the Airport according to article L 122-1 of the “Code de l’Aviation Civile” (Civil Aviation Code).
On 8 June 1990, the town of Deauville sub-contracted the management of the Airport to the Pays d’Auge Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in accordance with article R 221-5 of the “Code de l’Aviation Civile” (Civil Aviation Code).
A common willingness to coordinate the development of the Airport in Normandy
The Upper and Lower Normandy regions decided to coordinate the airport's development on their territory and optimize their financial support in this area, “in order to avoid a thin spread of investments that would allow the achievement of nationwide infrastructure to take precedence, and to achieve a certain economy of scale” (Public Report of the Cour des Comptes (Court of Auditors), “Les aéroports français face aux mutations du transport aérien” (French Airports in the face of the changes of air transport), 9th July 2008, p. 138).
Deauville Airport – a Strategic Choice
The results of a study conducted in 2005 revealed that Deauville Saint-Gatien Airport offered the best chance of success for the development of new destinations from Normandy. This was a result of several contributing factors: the airport’s geographical position, its strong potential to enhance the region’s tourism and boost the economy, and the existing physical infrastructure at the airport.
The creation of the Syndicat Mixte of Deauville Normandy Airport
After the publication of the study, representatives from the Lower and Upper Normandy Regions met with the town of Deauville to examine the terms of a partnership. Resolutions taken on the 9th May 2006, the 12th May 2006 and on the 12th June 2006 respectively led to the formation of the Syndicat Mixte of Deauville Normandie Airport by the town of Deauville, the Lower Normandy Regional Govt and the Upper Normandy Regional Govt. and approval was given to the statutes therein. The Prefect of Calvados authorized the formation of the Syndicat Mixte of Deauville Normandy Airport in an decree dated the 21st July 2006.
The offices of the Syndicat Mixte of Deauville Normandy Airport are located at Deauville Saint-Gatien Airport, 14130 Saint-Gatien-des-Bois.
